The committee met over the course of the last year and came up with three proposals, Krogstrand said. Now those contests will be more spread out.Ī committee comprised of school officials and coaches was created to address the safety and scheduling concerns. In past years, some Class A football teams could play as many as five games in 22 days at the end of the season, he said. "There had been some conversation on the national level and then also regionally about the schedule of games with all the information we know about exposure to contact and recovery time," he said. Krogstrand stressed that the decision to move the start of the seas ahead was about safety. I have a lot of friends who are 4-H families who want to be at the game and want to be at 4-H activities," Stroschein said. "It has been kind of a difficult situation for the 4-H parents (with kids in) this football game. Sharon Stroschein, Warner School Board member, said the new schedule has created conflicts for families within the school district. I know that's what their choice is going to be," Bruns said, adding that scheduling game wasn't up to the schools. "As a young male growing up and being in high school, football is a big deal. He said he doubts a football player would miss the game against the Monarchs for a 4-H event or fair concert. "We have just a few families whose children won't be able to potentially show (4-H) with the fair going on and football going on at the same time," Bruns said. Northwestern High School Superintendent Ryan Bruns isn't pleased with the scheduling, knowing that there are families in the school district that have to make a difficult decision. "There have been years when I have had five or six kids that have been gone (from practice) because they had to go to the fair, but not this year," he said. Shaun Wanner, Groton's head football coach, said he has only one player in 4-H out of 34 students who are out for football this year. I'd rather play football anyway," Keith said. "I honestly, I'm not a real big fan of the fair, I guess. It is fun, so the fair doesn't really mean all that much," Oliver said. "I'd rather be playing football then be out at the fair. Groton High School senior football players Jackson Oliver and Brandon Keith agree that the football field trumps the fairgrounds. I think the fair will draw a lot of people," Fetherhuff said. I feel there won't be as many fans there as there (were) at last year's game. At least we get to be out there playing Groton. "I think it's not that good that we have to miss (the fair). "This year there's a game that lines up on one of the big days of the fair, but it's really not that big of deal because everyone on the team wants to be out there playing Groton instead of out there having fun at the concert," Torbert said. Roncalli High School players Gabe Torbert and Mike Fetherhuff, both seniors, have no qualms about missing the fair in favor of the Groton game. The hope is that the season shift give players more time to recover and cuts down on the number of injuries come playoff time, said John Krogstrand, assistant executive director for the SDHSAA. I am participating in the goat show on Friday and we already did dog shows earlier." The hardest part about it is getting to places on time and getting things done before our deadline. My coach let me leave practice early for a 4-H event. "Everything revolves around time and the people we work with. "(Wednesday) night we were shaving goats and our clippers weren't working, and I had to stop to go practice when my mom needed me for help," Wiedebush said in a phone interview earlier today. He's spent the week juggling the two extracurriculars. He plays football for the Monarchs and is in 4-H. Levi Weidebush is a sophomore at Warner High School. The concert starts at 8 p.m.įor players, of course, the choice is easy. At the same time, Northwestern and Warner play in Mellette. Roncalli and Groton kick off the season at 7 p.m. There are two big local football games being played at the same time as the Trace Adkins concert at the fairgrounds' Larry Gerlach Grandstand. Some folks who love football and the Brown County Fair are going to have to make a tough choice Friday night.
